Improve Your Digital Literacy with Get Online Week 2017

By Kay FleuryUpdated on March 13, 2020

All you need to do is try one thing! That’s the slogan for this year’s Get Online Week – a week that helps to support online digital literacy and improved technological skills. If you’ve heard about this initiative and want to get involved, be sure to read on to learn how you can participate, and everything you need to know about celebrating Get Online Week.

What is Get Online Week?

Get Online Week is a week that celebrates improved digital literacy and access to technology for all by the sharing of resources, technological assistance, and running of locally-based events. It is a non-profit initiative run through the Good Things Foundation, a charity that supports digital inclusion.

When is Get Online Week?

Get Online Week takes place from October 2-8 in 2017.

5 ways to participate in Get Online Week

1. Register your organization to host an event to help others.

If you have the resources to run an informational session, a seminar, a lesson, or anything similar, you can really help many people in your local community who are interested in learning new digital skills. If you register your event as part of Get Online Week, you’ll likely bring in a much larger crowd, or get the word out about what your organization does to many more people.

2. Find an event near you to participate in to improve your digital skills.

If you can’t run an event yourself, try to find one to join in on. In general, many organizations will run smaller, classroom-like sessions that will teach you a solid skill that you can implement into your daily life. Make sure you register for the event, or make contact with the organizer so they know you’re coming. Often, these kinds of sessions will require the use of resources such as computers or devices, so the organizer needs a heads-up that you’ll be attending.

3. Try1Thing – and add a new skill to your repertoire.

The slogan speaks for itself – if you make it your goal to try just one new thing, you’ll quickly fall in love with how easy it is to make your life easier and more efficient by getting online. Don’t be afraid to branch out and try new things – sign up for a new website, download an app, buy a new device, get online banking, try buying something from Amazon.com – whatever interests you the most.

4. Participate in the social media conversation and encourage others.

If you like to use Twitter or other social media websites, join in on the conversation and discuss digital inclusion with others. Be sure to use the hashtag “#Try1Thing” to connect with other people who are interested in the campaign.

5. Support the campaign by making a donation.

If this is a cause that you’re really passionate about, then be sure to make a donation. You can donate to the Good Things Foundation to help support the campaign, and all future Get Online Weeks. If you don’t have a lot of disposable income, you can donate your time by volunteering for an event in your city.
